Cycling in the Marlborough area

The Sanctuary in Ogbourne St.George is on the route of the Great Western Sportive cycling event.

The old Swindon-Marlborough railway path is regularly used as a fast and safe off-road route. Sustrans has improved the path lately to make it a better cycle path, as Route 482 which joins National Route 45 in Chisledon. The Chisledon Timberland Path is an important section of Route 482 that gets people over the M4 and into Swindon without the hassle of using main roads.

The area provides excellent training routes for cyclists and triathletes, whether you're leisurely or competitive, like the friendly people in the Marlborough and District Triathlon Club.

The North Wilts Rivers Route is part of National Route 4, connecting Cherhill, Avebury and Marlborough.

If you are heading east along The Ridgeway, Sustrans has a guide map of the Wantage-Didcot area that is useful for walkers as well as cyclists.

The Wiltshire Cycleway  - all sections have PDF maps available from Wiltshire Council plus one map of the entire Cycleway.

The Kennet and Avon cycle pathpath is part of the Bristol to Reading route.

Where to hire bicycles

Our guests say that Janice and Tim at Swindon Cycles have been very helpful, they are at 60a Beechcroft Road, Upper Stratton, Swindon Wiltshire SN2 7QD - Tel: 01793 700105. Current prices for hiring a pair of bicycles for three or four days are £12 per bike per day, and that comes with extras like panniers, spare inner tubes, etc. If arranged in advance, Swindon Cycles can drop-off and collect the bikes from here at The Sanctuary.

The Crown at Aldbourne is providing cycle hire from a converted stable block in the grounds of the pub. It has six bicycles and associated equipment available for hire to visitors and local people, purchased from and maintained by a local bike shop.
